How to use

  1. 1

Click “Select PDF Document” or drop your file into the workspace above.

  2. 2

Draw solid black boxes over sensitive names, Social Security numbers, bank figures, or addresses.

  3. 3

Verify the redactions in the live preview. Any page with redactions is automatically marked for True Irreversible Redaction.

  4. 4

Click “Download Redacted PDF” to export your file with all underlying text streams, fonts, and metadata destroyed.

Why standard PDF black rectangles leak your secrets

Drawing a black rectangle in basic PDF viewers or presentation software is one of the most common security mistakes in business and legal filings. A simple rectangle only covers the text visually; the underlying characters remain completely intact in the PDF content stream.

Anyone who opens the file can press Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C, or use search (Ctrl+F) to uncover and copy the supposedly hidden Social Security numbers, confidential pricing, or whistleblower identities.

Pixel rasterization: Byte-level text destruction

YuliusBox solves this vulnerability through True Irreversible Redaction. Any page containing redaction boxes is rendered at high resolution (2x viewport scale, ~150–200 DPI) into an offscreen canvas bitmap.

Opaque black rectangles are painted directly into the raw pixel grid, permanently overwriting the pixels where sensitive letters used to be. The resulting image is embedded into a clean PDF document, and all document-level metadata (Title, Author, Producer, Creator, and XMP streams) is wiped.

Understanding the trade-offs of permanent redaction

Because redacted pages are flattened into image bitmaps, text on those specific pages can no longer be highlighted, copied, or full-text searched. The file size of those pages may also increase compared to pure vector text.

Crucially, pages that do not contain any redactions are copied directly as original vector pages, preserving their crisp fonts, selectable text, and compact file size.

100% in-browser execution with zero server uploads

Your legal contracts, tax returns, and bank statements never leave your device. All PDF parsing, canvas rendering, redaction, and reassembly execute locally in your browser memory via pdf-lib and PDF.js. Zero bytes of your documents are ever transmitted across the internet.

Frequently asked questions

How does true rasterized redaction permanently destroy text?

Redacted pages are converted into image bitmaps and the black boxes are painted directly into the pixel data. Because the original PDF text stream and font glyphs are never copied to the new file, the text is physically destroyed and cannot be recovered.

Can someone unmask or delete the black boxes on the exported PDF?

No. The black boxes are baked into the flat image pixels. There is no separate annotation layer or hidden text object behind the black boxes to remove or reveal.

Can text still be selected or searched on redacted pages?

No. Because redacted pages are converted into images, text on those specific pages cannot be selected or searched. Pages without redactions remain fully selectable and searchable.

Are document metadata and author details also stripped?

Yes. The exporter automatically removes Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Producer, Creator, and embedded XMP metadata to eliminate accidental information leakage.
